THE COLUMN: LOW CARBON 101 —

THE COLUMN: LOW CARBON 101 — Decoding the Low-Carbon Economy, the Opening Chapter of Survival and Opportunity for Agribusiness

(English is below)

Decoupling

Growing Better: Ten Critical Transitions to Transform Food and Land Use โดย The Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU, 2019) ระบุว่า ระบบอาหารปัจจุบันสร้างต้นทุนแฝง (Hidden Costs) ทางสิ่งแวดล้อมที่สูงกว่ามูลค่าทางเศรษฐกิจที่ผลิตได้ การปรับโครงสร้างเพื่อเตรียมพร้อมสู่เศรษฐกิจคาร์บอนต่ำจึงไม่ใช่ทางเลือก แต่เป็นกระแสลมระดับโลกที่กำหนดอนาคตของธุรกิจ

Green Finance

Regenerate: From Farm to Future

(Unfair Advantage)

“Ignoring your carbon footprint today means letting your business turn into a ‘Stranded Asset.’ Low carbon isn’t a CSR campaign — it’s a parallel strategy to protect your balance sheet and secure cheaper cost of capital.”

The agriculture and food industry is the backbone of the global economy — yet it’s also a sector responsible for roughly one-third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. In an era where capital is being herded toward strict ESG standards, traditional agricultural business models are being re-priced for risk by capital markets. If executives still see carbon reduction as merely “image-building,” their organization may be losing competitiveness without even realizing it.

Beyond CSR: Toward the Goal of Decoupling

In the world of institutional investors and Wall Street, “Low Carbon Economy” doesn’t mean planting trees for a photo in the annual report. The ultimate long-term strategic goal is Decoupling — separating economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions. Even in agriculture, proving that revenue can rise while carbon output clearly falls at the company level is still something that will take time to demonstrate.

However, what’s already clear at the macro level is this: the report Growing Better: Ten Critical Transitions to Transform Food and Land Use by The Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU, 2019) states that today’s food system generates hidden environmental costs that exceed the economic value it produces. Restructuring toward a low-carbon economy is therefore not optional — it’s a global tailwind shaping the future of business.

Stranded Assets: The Balance-Sheet Threat CFOs Need to Watch

What needs to be recognized is “Transition Risk.” As regulations tighten and carbon taxes get enforced, a company’s existing assets — such as farmland obtained through deforestation, farms that can’t manage methane emissions, or processing plants running on fossil-fuel-intensive energy — will rapidly lose value and become Stranded Assets. At that point, financial institutions will raise interest rates or even cut off access to credit entirely (Capital Flight) for businesses without a tangible Climate Transition Plan.

Warning Signals from Capital Markets — When High Carbon Equals Balance-Sheet Risk

The risk of Stranded Assets is taking concrete shape in global capital markets, driven by the movement of The FAIRR Initiative, a global institutional investor network with over $90 trillion in combined assets under management (AUM). FAIRR has developed the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index to assess the climate risk of major meat and agriculture companies.

Companies that score poorly and lack a clear carbon-reduction plan (Scope 1, 2, 3) face an Escalation Strategy from institutional investors. This typically starts with Active Engagement to pressure management into changing course. If, after two to three years, there’s still insufficient progress, investors will often escalate through standard ESG tools — such as Proxy Voting against management at shareholder meetings, using this risk data as the basis for their decisions. And if the company remains unresponsive to the end, the final measure is Divestment. This is clear evidence that, in investors’ eyes, high-carbon supply chains are assets genuinely at risk of impairment — and can, in the long run, be cut off from capital altogether.

Rather than waiting for its factories and existing production lines to lose value, Mitr Phol Group chose to lean into the “opportunity” dimension — repositioning itself from a sugar producer to a driver of the bio-economy.

Mitr Phol manages carbon from upstream (through a policy promoting fresh cane cutting to reduce burning) to downstream (producing biomass electricity), enabling it to set a Net Zero target for 2050 under SBTi principles. This strategic shift protects the company’s existing infrastructure from becoming Stranded Assets. It has opened the door for Mitr Phol to access green finance at competitive interest rates — while firmly retaining its global B2B customer base.

Regenerate: From Farm to Future

Moving toward a Low Carbon Economy is a major structural overhaul. The Board of Directors must lead the integration of “carbon cost” into every business decision — from credit risk assessment to supplier selection. Agribusinesses that prepare early will be able to turn their climate burden into an Unfair Advantage that competitors can’t easily replicate.
