THE COLUMN: The Carbon Equation – Decoding the True Definition of Low Carbon and the Missing Link Dictating the Fate of Agribusiness

(English is below)

(Carbon Cycle)”

The Cost of Excess Carbon:

The Agriculture Paradox:

Regenerative Agriculture

Regenerate: From Farm to Future

“Carbon is not the enemy, but rather a resource that has escaped its proper cycle. The challenge of the Low Carbon economy in the agricultural sector is not an absolute cessation of emissions, but managing the equilibrium to pull the environmental burden from the atmosphere back down as an asset in the soil.”

When discussing the term Low Carbon, many executives might picture factories ceasing toxic emissions or the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. However, in the context of the agricultural and food industries, the definition of Low Carbon is far more complex and profound. It is not merely about “reduction,” but about “reorganizing” the natural equilibrium, which serves as the very foundation of global food security.

The True Meaning: Toward Managing the “Carbon Cycle”

In science and environmental economics, Low Carbon refers to conducting business activities that generate the minimum amount of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) per unit of production (GHG Intensity).

However, merely reducing GHG Intensity is insufficient. If production volume grows faster than the rate of carbon reduction, organizations must concurrently consider both growth figures and total greenhouse gas emissions. The core of the climate crisis the world is facing is not the existence of carbon itself, but the fact that humanity has extracted carbon stored underground (in the form of fossil fuels and chemical fertilizers) and released it into the atmosphere at a rate much faster than nature can reabsorb it. Therefore, the Low Carbon concept is a strategic framework to “reduce additional emissions” and “increase reabsorption” to prevent the ecological balance from collapsing.

The Cost of Excess Carbon: The Threat When Nature’s Equilibrium Collapses

When excessive carbon escapes and accumulates in the atmosphere, the resulting drawbacks do not stop at rising global temperatures. Instead, they create a Volatility Cost that directly collides with agribusinesses.

Excess carbon is the catalyst for Extreme Weather Events, such as abnormally prolonged droughts alternating with sudden storms and flash floods. This volatility constitutes Physical Risks that destroy cultivation cycles, suppress Yield, and cause upstream raw material prices to swing violently. Furthermore, excessive carbon and other greenhouse gases reduce soil moisture and accelerate the outbreaks of new pest species. Ultimately, “excess carbon in the air” will reflect as “skyrocketing production costs,” which will inevitably erode the business’s Margin.

The Agriculture Paradox: The Agricultural Sector as Both Culprit and Knight

The most critical connecting point between Low Carbon, the environment, and agriculture is the “Paradox” of this very industry.

The Climate Change and Land (2019) report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) clearly states that agriculture, forestry, and other land uses account for approximately 23% of global greenhouse gas emissions (stemming from deforestation, chemical fertilizer usage, and methane from livestock).

Simultaneously, the agricultural sector wields “two mechanical powerhouses” as vital weapons. The first powerhouse is a potential that stands out above other industries: acting as a “Carbon Sink” through the plant photosynthesis process that draws carbon dioxide down into the soil. The second powerhouse is “Biological Circularity”; the agricultural sector possesses massive volumes of organic waste ready to be utilized to capture greenhouse gases and recycle them for emissions Mitigation. Agribusiness is thus the primary industry capable of tangibly linking environmental solutions with the generation of business profits.

Danone and the Carbon Sink Mechanism to Restore the Ecosystem

Danone, a world-leading food and beverage company, clearly envisions the potential of carbon sinks. The company recognizes that its dairy supply chain has high carbon emissions and degrades soil quality in the long run. Consequently, Danone has intervened at a structural level through its Regenerative Agriculture policy.

Danone’s strategy involves collaborating with dairy farms to improve soil health and pasture management. As the soil becomes healthier, it absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere (Carbon Sequestration). Reducing carbon in the air is thus converted into organic matter that makes grass grow better. This enables Danone to maintain the stability of its raw material supply chain alongside managing the organization’s Low Carbon targets.

CPF and the Methane Circuit-Breaker Mechanism Linking Environment to Farm Efficiency

In Thailand’s context, Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF) has clearly demonstrated the utilization of the second powerhouse (Biological Circularity) through its livestock systems.

Swine farm waste is a source of methane, which has a global warming impact 28 times more severe than carbon dioxide (based on the IPCC’s latest GWP100 assessment standards). CPF has implemented Biogas systems in its swine farms to capture the methane gas previously released into the environment, using it to generate electricity for internal farm use. This operation not only mitigates environmental impacts at the source (Mitigation) but also cuts the farm’s fossil fuel costs. It stands as a low-carbon model that bridges gas capture with Operational Efficiency. (Reference: CPF Climate Change Management)

Regenerate: From Farm to Future

The Low Carbon Economy is therefore not about business restrictions, but about understanding the “ecosystem of resources.” Executives in the agricultural industry must adopt a new perspective: atmospheric carbon is a risk variable that creates volatility, but soil carbon and biomass energy are assets. Fine-tuning production processes to align with nature will be the master key to unlocking economic potential in the next decade.
